More guidance
These notes help you decide whether to book online, choose a long appointment or call reception.
New patients First visits often need longer so your GP can understand your history.
- Book a long appointment if you have a complex history, several medications or several concerns.
- Bring a current medication list and relevant reports where available.
- Consider arranging transfer of records from your previous practice.
What to do: Book online and select the most appropriate new-patient or long appointment option if available.
Vaccinations Vaccination visits may involve both the nurse and GP.
- For childhood vaccinations, bring the child’s health record where relevant.
- For adult vaccinations, eligibility, availability and cost may vary.
- Call reception if you are unsure which appointment to select.
What to do: Book online if a vaccination option is available, or call reception.
Procedures Most procedures need an initial GP assessment first.
- This includes skin excision or biopsy, iron infusion, Implanon procedures, IUD procedures if offered, joint injection and wound care.
- The procedure appointment is usually arranged after your GP has assessed what is needed.
What to do: Book an initial GP consultation or call reception.
Skin checks One spot may fit a standard appointment; a full skin check usually needs longer.
- Book a standard appointment for one focused spot check if that is your only concern.
- Book a long appointment or dedicated skin-check option if you need a more comprehensive skin examination.
- Procedures are generally booked separately after assessment.
What to do: Book online and select the closest skin-check option if available, or call reception.
Forms, reports and medicals Detailed paperwork usually needs a long appointment.
- Bring the complete form and any supporting information.
- Some forms or reports may attract a private fee.
- Completion cannot be guaranteed without adequate clinical information.
What to do: Book a long appointment and view fees if you are unsure about costs.
Health assessments and preventive health Some assessments need both nurse and GP time.
- This may include preventive health reviews, cardiovascular risk checks, older-person health assessments and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health assessments.
- Reception can help arrange the correct appointment sequence.
- If you are preparing for a routine preventive health visit, the preventive health planner can help you make a short discussion list.
What to do: Call reception to arrange.
Results, follow-up and telehealth The right appointment depends on complexity and whether examination is needed.
- One straightforward result may fit a standard appointment.
- Several or complex results usually need a long appointment.
- Telehealth depends on clinical appropriateness, Medicare eligibility, previous attendance and whether a physical examination is needed.
What to do: Book online for routine follow-up, or call reception if you are unsure.
