Free pneumococcal vaccination expanded for eligible adults

Pneumococcal disease is caused by bacteria and can lead to serious illness including pneumonia, bloodstream infection and meningitis. Older adults and people with certain health conditions can have a higher risk of severe disease.

From 1 July 2026, the National Immunisation Program introduced an updated pneumococcal vaccine for eligible adults and expanded access to funded vaccination.

Who is eligible for a free pneumococcal vaccine?

You may be eligible under the National Immunisation Program if you are:

• aged 65 years or over
• Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and aged 25 years or over
• aged 18 years or over with a specified medical condition that increases the risk of severe pneumococcal disease

Medical conditions and individual eligibility

Funded eligibility includes a range of specified medical risk conditions. These can include some chronic respiratory, kidney, heart and liver conditions, immunocompromising conditions, previous invasive pneumococcal disease, asplenia and other recognised risks.

The recommended vaccine and timing depend on your age, medical history and previous pneumococcal vaccinations. Your GP can check the current criteria and advise what is appropriate for you.

If you have had a pneumococcal vaccine before

Eligible adults who previously received another pneumococcal vaccine may still be recommended to receive the updated vaccine. Current program advice generally requires at least 12 months between the previous pneumococcal vaccine and the updated dose.

Please bring any vaccination records you have so your GP can confirm the appropriate timing.

Possible side effects

Side effects are usually mild and short-lived. They may include pain, redness or swelling at the injection site, tiredness, headache, muscle aches or fever.
